What to know before you choose a French wedding venue

• Exclusive use or shared: most private châteaux hire the whole property to one wedding at a time. Check whether that includes the grounds, the rooms and the kitchen.
• Catering rules: some venues use their own kitchen or an approved caterer list, others let you bring your own. Ask early, since it shapes your budget.
• Season: May to September is peak season, and the best Saturdays often go a year or more ahead. Spring and early autumn can be easier to secure and cheaper.
• Legal ceremony: a legally binding marriage in France takes place at the town hall (mairie) and has residency requirements, so many international couples marry legally at home and hold their ceremony at the venue.
